Another poem from my friend Richard Nowogrodzki. His newest chemotheraphy treatments have begun; I continue to send him healing and angels.

Saw him a few week ago at a friend’s birthday party - and dear Richard looked so wonderful, just emanating Light, and more Transparent than ever ... His new poem:

One wintry, snowy dusk
I went for a short walk
through a small shrubby field.
I brushed against
a dry weedy stalk
for only a moment,
but it was long enough
for a flock of tiny burrs
to collect
on my outer clothing.
For over a month, now,
I’ve been picking
the small, sharp husks
from my scarf,
my coat, my gloves, my boots.
Occasionally I find one
that worked its way onto
a shirt or a sock
and has survived the wash.
Ah, attachments:
so effortlessly gained,
so difficult to shed.
Habits of thought and action,
patterns and preferences of life --
how long will I
hang onto them
and carry them?
will I have the care
and courage
to let them go?
